What Rights

I’m not sure even where to begin. This topic can be so huge that it could be a plethora of concepts, ideas and understandings that could go down any number of rabbit holes. That being said, what I’m going to try and convey is what we think are rights aren’t necessarily good and what is good isn’t necessarily right.

In this great country of America, we have tremendous freedoms. Those freedoms come at a great cost. We puff out our chest, walk proud, and yet we also act like a spoiled brat. Now that’s all as a whole, but this country is made up of individuals and each individual has their own freedoms. The problem I see is twofold. One, we don’t use our freedoms effectively as individuals for the greater good of all much of the time. We allow a few to control the freedoms we do have. But what I want to talk about is more about the freedom of the individual. If you don’t start with the individual, then there will be no freedom at all.

We as people pretty much have freedom to be human and being human should accompany empathy, compassion, respect and responsibility. But what I am seeing is that this freedom is actually creating a warped sense of power, from the highest level to the lowest. Just because we have freedom doesn’t mean it’s meant to be abused. We as a species have been doing this for thousands of years. Freedoms without checks and balances never seems to end well. Take a child that isn’t disciplined, more often than naught they usually grow up not having a clear understanding of why there are rules. Take a society that rants and raves about their freedoms and then abuses those said freedoms and that society becomes one of chaos and discord.

Freedoms are free but come at a great cost. Just because we have the freedom doesn’t mean we should have a free for all. And just because it is free to all doesn’t mean that it’s meant to be exploited. Without boundaries there is unruliness, but too many boundaries and there is rebellion. There must be a balance but finding that balance is the million-dollar dilemma. It starts with one person talking with another person and trying to figure out what’s best for all instead of the few. Got any ideas?
