Must Be Entertained

As I’ve gotten older, I am able to reflect better on situations around me. If you have gained wisdom going through life hopefully this is one attribute you can gleam from. But that being said, one of the things I see is that we all must be entertained. It started long ago when our brains felt the value of what entertainment does to it. We feel good, at least in the moment. And that my friends has been a long running issue ever since. We seek out that which makes us feel good and sometimes we forget those things that don’t feel good. When we feel uncomfortable then we don’t have the desire to keep feeling that right? So, we put off those things and do the things that serve our dopamine in the now. We must be entertained.

We watch tv for hours allowing time to just slip by episode after episode. We get lost in the make-believe fantasy of nothingness. We can even become consumed by news and world events. Now if that isn’t a sad state then I don’t know what I’m talking about. We allow everything else to fill us but those things that should be filling us. We go to football games, plays, parties. We drink and socialize. We seek out anything that keeps us distracted from living and so we go through life basically numb and dead and don’t even realize it. Sounds harsh. But look at your life, really look at it? Are you working in your degree field, if you even have one? And still paying on all that student loan debt too I bet. Are you living where you want to live? Are you doing those things you dreamed as a child? Maybe you wanted to be an astronaut, or maybe you really did want to be a teacher. But are you living your best or are you just getting by? Are you living your dreams as an adult or are you just going through the motions?

Are we allowing to be entertained be the crux of happiness, success, fulfillment and sense of being? Or is it all just a ruse? That’s all I’m asking. Just to take a look at what you do, what you really do in daily life vs. what you really want to do in your soul. We have allowed the bells and whistles to entertain us into oblivion until it has consumed us and we no longer even know what we are here for, what our purpose is? It’s all been a gimmick that has worked magnificently. A gimmick that has held us in bondage to be entertained instead of living. We should be exploring the world, meeting creative people, doing amazing things. Not to entertain us but to grow us, to teach us that life is meant to be lived every day with every breath. We are not meant to just live out life in entertainment splurges to fill our boredom or our lack of being productive because we allow fear to rule.

Get out, shut the tv off, leave your phone. You don’t really need them. But you do need air and space. Don’t go to that office party where you’re not really friends with anyone, don’t go to the bar and numb your pain behind the entertainment of alcohol and social existence. Go do what you truly love and that my friends will be all the entertainment you need. That entertainment will fill your soul like nothing else in the world can. That’s what I’m saying. Do you get it? We must be entertained one way or another, but one way gives a now life and the other gives a slow death. Dare to reach for the stars, dare to sell your house and move to an island, write a book instead of watching that series. What have you got to lose except yourself? The doors open, it’s up to you to step out.
