Dog Eat Dog

The definition of this is: Harsh or ruthless self-interest. Sounds negative and bad doesn’t it. Maybe to a degree, but maybe to a degree it really is. Let’s talk about that. We live in a world, sadly, that looks out for number one. If we’re honest and take a real hard look at the world around us, we may see that people move up, so to speak, on the backs of others. It’s a dog-eat-dog world. Most of us work for someone, the man, the boss, the system. We plug on day after day, making ends meet, just to get up and do it all again. We work and the people above us, and there are always people above us, take advantage of our time. We get paid money for our time. Usually they are not equal, money for time. Usually there is someone gaining from our time being used and taken. We live in a capitalistic society which just adds to this dog-eat-dog world. Crap rolls downhill. We have all heard that saying. Why is that? Why does the bottom rung get crapped on? Because there is always someone taking advantage of our position. It doesn’t matter when or where. We can be a garbage man, we can be an executive, but we still live in a world that is ruthless and out for its own self-interest.

Throughout history man has been eating from this trough. And we do it so blindly as if it’s just how life is supposed to be. We hardly have someone stand beside us when the storms of life really hit. Oh, it’s easy when it’s rainbows and lollipops but when we need, truly need a friend, when we need a hand, it’s usually not to be found. We are a selfish people, and we look out for ourselves and will eat the person next to us if it takes us higher. Dog-eat-dog world. Those people that give, more often than not, are taken advantage of. We give our time, we give our substance, we give our lives, only to be used for something, someone, that in turns builds their life up. Unfortunately, poverty often breeds poverty and wealth breeds wealth. The poor become poorer; the rich become richer but, in all actuality, we are all just eating each other. We’ve been doing it for a long, long time. Money isn’t the evil, but it is a problem. Being successful isn’t a problem but the separation of class can be. Being uneducated doesn’t make us not have value but it is used against us. It is grievous, but we do live in a dog-eat-dog world.

There are the few who live above this. There are the few that have the wisdom and awareness to live apart from this. But it’s difficult for we are a very ruthless and selfish people when we really look at it. I have the dream that instead of being a dog-eat-dog world that we may become a hand-to-hand world. That we are equal no matter how much money we have. We help each other no matter what color skin we have. That we lift each other up in life instead of tear down and walk over. That we give instead of take. If we all did that then I’m positive that we would all have what we need. We all could live our dreams, we all could work where we desired to work, we all would give so that we would all have. That way of living is completely opposite of a dog-eat-dog world. I give in my writing that it may touch you on this journey, that it may make a difference, some small seed planted to create change. Without change, life is stagnant and will die. I give to you my hand to say, “I’ll stay the course”. I’m willing to change because you’re not just another dog, you are me in reflection. I give life to you and therefore it gives life to me and that takes away from any dog eating dog mentality. What do you want to eat?
