Candy Canes

I recently had an experience. I found hot cocoa flavored candy canes. I am always skeptical about things like this but I’m usually willing to try. So, I did. I’m not a fan of plain Ol candy canes in general but I’m here to say this flavor was one of the best candy canes I have ever had. They were and are amazing. People are like candy canes. There are different flavors of people and their personalities and styles. There are people that don’t like candy canes, and some people that would never try a different flavor no matter what. And there are people that would try some but not others. That’s what makes us so unique. We all look like candy canes but yet we can all have different flavors.

My thought process is if we are all candy canes and can have different flavors why don’t we get along better. Does it really matter the flavor? Does it matter if you’re from Greece, or Iran, the United States or Africa? The color may be different, the language may be different, the culture and beliefs may even be different, but we are still just candy canes. We are all human beings. Just because we are different flavors doesn’t mean that some are less than. Humans are notorious for labeling other humans as inferior. All the way back to caveman days so to speak. Neanderthals who thrived as a species for hundreds of thousands of years eventually were bred out so they must have been the weaker species. But science tells us this isn’t true. They just got overrun by the masses. Rome tried to conquer everyone around them and oppress those that wouldn’t conform. Hitler did the same. So did the new nation as well with how Native Americans, Africans, Hispanics, Chinese and anyone they could exploit were treated. And we still are doing this to this day to a large extent. We do this with religion, with education with politics. We do this with geography in the world and even in our own country. We treat people as something to be discarded instead of something with value.

I say, take a chance, try a different flavor of candy cane. Maybe your tastes buds will get along, maybe not, but it doesn’t mean the candy cane is bad in itself just because you don’t like it. It’s just another candy cane. Be open to the difference. When we can open our minds to the possibility of things then we can better understand the nature around us. I think we are stupendously out of balance as a species. As a candy cane, many want to think they are a Twix and therefor a whole different type of candy all in themselves. But that’s just not the truth as to how I’m representing this topic. We are all candy canes as a species and it’s ok to be a different flavor. It’s ok to be a hot cocoa flavored candy cane if you wanna be. But we all know that a candy cane that tastes like vomit just doesn’t fit into the palette of good taste. So yes, there are flavors that some will like, and some will not, but we are all still just candy canes.
