Waiting For the World to Change

There’s a song about this title. I keep waiting, waiting for the world to change. I’m in my 50’s and have seen a tremendous amount of change in the world. I remember getting our first microwave. I remember pagers and the first gigantic car phones. I remember dial up, those old enough can hear that sound even now. I remember Reagan and the Pope being shot. I remember 9-11 in 2001, 23 years ago. I have seen vast amounts of change and have adapted as a Generation X has had to. We are progressing in technology faster than ever before and it’s only accelerating as each year quickly passes. The world has always changed as we as a species becomes more knowledgeable, as we explore the possibilities and the unknown. We learned fire, we learned about the cosmos, we learned planting, and engineering. We learned about gun powder; we learned about germs, and we learned about technology and to this day are still learning. The world from the beginning, is about change.

But with all our advances in technology, in science, in communication, in health on and on, we still kill each other and still pollute this planet. We are the only species that does this on a global scale. Have we really learned anything? All these advancements, a computer in your back pocket at your very fingertips and what do we do with it? Are we making the world a better place? What does it take to have that computer in your back pocket, the plastics, the batteries, the cell towers? Where do we advance from here? An implant in the side of your head or in your brain? It’s not so farfetched. I love what technology brings to a great degree but I also loath at what it brings as well. And that’s where we are in today’s world. We have had to adapt at a momentous level, and I think due to that some of our most beautiful aspects of sharing this planet has been left behind. But as look through history I can see this pattern repeating itself over and over again. It’s not a new understanding.

So, I look about and I see so much beauty and I keep having hope, I keep waiting, waiting for the world to change. Oh, we are changing, we are evolving and transforming faster than an Autobot, but I think with this change we have discarded a part of our humanity that binds us together. In nature the strongest are on top, they are the alpha and the omega, survival of the fittest. But we as humans have bastardized this. Money and wealth have distorted nature and brought unbalance. Because of this change, whomever holds the money believes that they wield the power over people and we the people allow it. That’s not a change in history that has been good nor is it good in our current world. So yeah, I’m waiting, waiting for the world to change. A world to come together and take care of each other and this beautiful precious blue planet. Some aware souls are out there, and they do their best and I believe it makes a difference but it’s a true struggle. One person at a time is what change is about. One person can cause a ripple in an ocean that reaches the farthest lands. Come, take my hand and let’s not wait for change, but be the change. More ripples are needed.
