What a Species

We are a young species especially in the confines of being Homo Sapiens. Hominoids have been around for millions of years whereas homo sapiens have been around for 200 to 300 thousand years. Through science nor religion can the existence of hominoids be truly explained. There are educated guesses, there is scientific knowledge and there is a whole lot of faith, but faith will be for another writing in the future. For now, I’m going to focus on just the Homo Sapien species. We have “evolved”, yes that is what we have done, at an exorbitant rate, especially over the last 200 years, faster than any time in history. We can scientifically and archeology wise show ancient peoples from 10 to 12,000 years ago in places like Göbekli Tepe, and a little sooner in places like Angkor Wat, Machu Picchu and Chichen Itza. All across the world. Yes, we have evolved. But my question is, evolved into what? As this big-brained mammal with opposable thumbs, who has dominated this planet, I have the ability to look back at history and learn from what we were to what we have become. We may have more technology, but we haven’t learned all that much in name of humanity.

So much of my writing seems to be pessimistic and I must admit that it is, but I feel it is with good intentions. So much of life we as a people just run around on the treadmill of existence and never put much thought into. Many never question anything deeper than what’s for dinner, what will entertain us, what serves us in the moment. We are controlled by emotion, by fable, by superstitions, by fear. Controlled by popular belief at the time, by – in current times, media, conspiracy theory. We tend to have mob mentality much of the time. And we are most definitely controlled by wealth and those that are in power. Just look at history. Those chiefs, those kings, those pharaohs, those religious leaders, those dictators, those with the “blood line”, those with a certain color of skin, those with the power and control have always lorded over others if you will in some form or fashion. Until the masses can no longer take the oppression and rise up, but that’s the exception and not the rule. Generally, we as a species act like sheep wherever, whenever someone or something exudes power over us. And those in power as a whole do not take care of those seemingly beneath them but abuse this power to their own gain and most often, ultimate demise. Just as we have done as a species to every other species on this planet. We play God, we play the egocentric mindset of being the center of the universe now that we think we are so smart. We are so small and dumb in the scope of life on this small planet.

Science has shown that “SPACE” is beyond huge. That just in our own Milky Way galaxy there are 100 million planets. In the universe there are over 2 trillion galaxies. Can you even wrap your brain around that? To think that there aren’t other life forms “out there” goes right to the statement, what a species we are. To think that we are the only life, that some recent created religion has the answers to anything is preposterous. Once people thought the world was flat and we would fall off the edge. Once we thought there were witches that needed to be burned. Once we thought we as a species was all there was. We have since learned there were many different hominoid species on this planet at the same time. Why did the big brained stupid species survive? We mistreat others on a global scale, we are destroying this planet faster than any time in history and very few ever come to the mindset of what are we doing, who are we, what are we here for. We don’t live in harmony; we don’t live in peace. We are a species that wars and destroys and controls to our own extinction. Yeah, what a species. I sure hope the future can get better because it sure seems like this journey we are on as a species is not in the best interest of our survival. Am I pessimistic, yeah, but I’m also aware and observant. I’m trying to do my part, I write, I talk, I share but I am old and am growing weary and I think too much of the time what is the point. And I come to the conclusion over and over again, that there has to be more than just existing. I hope you too can do more than just existing, more than just going through the motions. There is more to all of this then we truly know if only we choose that journey.
