Mirror, mirror on the wall. I’m almost positive there is a mirror in almost every household. What it’s for? It is to see a “reflection” of yourself. It allows us to see ourselves outside of our own eyes. But understand, the reflection that one sees is not how the world sees you. A mirrored reflection is opposite. Think about that for a moment. If you’re looking at someone their right eye is on your left but when looking in a mirror at yourself, your left eye is the mirrored image of your left eye. Understand? So, what we are seeing of ourselves in a mirror is not how the rest of the world would see us, it’s only how we see ourselves. And therein lies a dilemma. Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all. Our Ego may say ourselves, but I ask, what self are we talking about. Who are you really? You’re not what the mirror says, we have already shown that this image is an opposite image. So, when one sees themselves in a mirror, who are they looking at. Can one peer through the imagery and see the true self reflection of who they truly are? We see our shape, we see our blemishes, we see spots missed shaving, we see our muscles and our not so muscular body parts. We see how we look, we see how we feel, sometimes it’s negative, and sometimes it’s positive, but all in all it’s still a reflection. Who is the person in the mirror? What is the person in the mirror? Are you free to be or are you control by society and environment. One must look a certain way, one must act a certain way, one must be a certain way, all depending on social status, geographic location and upbringing. Who is staring at you from the mirror. Are you happy with that person? Do you know that person? We’re quick to say yes, but as I look around at the plethora of people not being happy, not knowing truly who they are, I’d say the mirror is only giving us a reflection of our true nature. Remember it is an opposite image, right.
Being human is a complicated process. I’ve written about things being simply complicated. Well, we definitely are that as a species. We are controlled by so many outside nuances that most of us are just going through the motions of living. As children, life is simple, there really are no worries. Now, that being said, living as a child is naive because children have no true understanding of the world around them. Food appears magically, clothes, heat, air conditioning, toys. It’s as we grow, we start to learn and as we learn there are millions of choices that are being made and going to be made. We are influenced by our surroundings to an enormous extent. Where we live, be it Manhattan or Madagascar. How we live, be it in a condo or a clay hut, all have a giant impact on who we become. Most of us just except life around us, we learn by our parents, by our community and that’s just the way it is. There is so much more than just that though. For me it’s like looking in the mirror and coming to the realization that what is in the mirror doesn’t have to be my reality, because it’s simply only a reflection. And to be aware of the reflection is where the whole game changes. Then life is about self-awareness and choice.
I think to a great degree, we all think we are in control of the things around us. But I think it’s just because we don’t care to look any deeper into this thing called life. We just go through the motions because it’s easier and it’s what everyone else is doing. We all have mirrors in our homes, for the most part, we have concluded that. We have concluded that mirrors are just a reflection as well, and we have concluded that we just take it for granted that what we see in the mirror is our true self, when it actually is not. Because that’s just what we do. Ha. Well, my hope from now on is that when you look at your reflection from this point on, it’s going to trigger a new response, a new understanding. That you’re not just looking at you, you’re looking at a reverse image of you and to be aware of that is to authentically be perceptive and conscious that life is not always a representation of what you see or even feel. It’s not just a mirror; it’s a whole new world. Life is more than a reflection. Life is way more than just being like everyone else. Life is a story of your journey, the journey you choose to see, choose to walk, choose to exist in. If you look in the mirror and just see the same old you, I implore you to look beyond the veil and to see a different you. Mirror, mirror on the wall, I see myself and I ain’t so small. Time for a new reflection.
